One of the more intriguing matchups on today’s eight-game MLB schedule is the opener of a four-game series between the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox (7:10 pm ET, NESN), two teams who are looking to close a mixed month on a positive note.

Entering May, both the Tigers and Red Sox were a respectable 17-13. However, this will be a losing month for both teams, no matter what happens in the next two days.

Detroit (27-28) is 10-15 in May after splitting two games with the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday, while Boston (28-28) is 11-15 in May after a 6-1 loss to Corbin Burnes and the Baltimore Orioles yesterday.

Detroit Tigers vs Boston Red Sox Betting Analysis

My favorite MLB bet today is from this afternoon’s matchup in Milwaukee, where the Brewers should give Colin Rea good run support once more and go over 3.5 runs against Jameson Taillon and the Cubs.

But a close second is in tonight’s tilt at Fenway Park, as there is a trend that lines up very favorably for the home team.

Both teams have identical 13-14 records in games following a loss, so it’s not that trend.

And while the Tigers are 8-12 as a road underdog, the Red Sox are 8-13 as a home favorite, so it’s not that trend, either.

What is the trend?

Last Saturday, Pivetta had his shortest start of the season, going 3.1 innings in Boston’s 6-3 home loss to the Brewers. In those 3.1 innings, he gave up seven hits, five runs, and three walks.

A repeat performance is unlikely, and a repeat result is even more unlikely.

Since joining the Red Sox in 2020, Pivetta has now allowed five or more runs in a start 14 times (in 85 starts). In the starts that followed, the Red Sox are 9-4, including a win over the Tampa Baya Rays on May 14 after Pivetta had allowed five runs in four innings in a loss to the Atlanta Braves on May 8.

While I do like the Red Sox to get the win tonight, I also like Flaherty to continue racking up the strikeouts. Flaherty is coming off back-to-back nine-strikeout outings, and he should push for a third in a row against a team that averages 9.63 strikeouts per game.
