Phillies vs Cubs MLB Predictions, Odds & Best Bets (7/2)

Today’s Phillies vs. Cubs MLB predictions and best bets are brought to you by BetOnline. BetOnline is a market leader in sports betting, offering various options from MLB odds to the NBA and everything in between.

As the 2024 MLB All-Star Break nears, Tuesday’s schedule sees the Philadelphia Phillies (55-29) beginning a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs (39-46) at Wrigley Field.

The Phillies head to the road looking for momentum after splitting a four-game series with the rival Miami Marlins. Meanwhile, the Cubs return home after being on the wrong side of a 7-1 collision with the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.

Can Philadelphia add another tally to the win column? Or will Chicago get the last laugh at home?

We’ll answer those questions and highlight today’s best MLB bets as we dive into my Phillies vs. Cubs predictions and picks.

Phillies vs Cubs Predictions & MLB Picks Today (7/2)

The Phillies enter tonight’s matchup as the No. 1 team in the Majors, however, their consistency hasn’t been there lately. They’ve alternated between wins and losses throughout the last few weeks, playing to a 9-9 SU record across their last 18 outings.

One of the big reasons behind Philadelphia’s recent back-and-forth play is injuries. Two of the Phillies’ top bats — Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper — are currently on the 10-day injured list and won’t be back until the weekend at the earliest. Regardless of how good the rest of the roster is, not having Schwarber and Harper for any stretch hurts.

The good news for the Phillies is that the Cubs are in a bit of a rut at the moment. Although Chicago hovered around .500 at the beginning of June, the club is now seven games below the mark following an abysmal 2-6 SU stretch across the last eight games. While five of those losses came on the road, it isn’t as if a return home will help.

After all, the Cubs are just 3-4 SU in their last seven home games. That’s without mentioning how they’re also 7-10 SU against the NL East this season, whereas the Phillies are 12-8 SU against NL Central clubs.

The Cubs haven’t experienced much success against NL East clubs this season.

Chicago also hasn’t had much luck lately against Philadelphia. The Phillies are on a five-game winning streak against the Cubs, outscoring the latter by an average of 3.8 runs in those meetings.

In order to continue that trend, the Phillies must get a strong performance from Michael Mercado, who’s making his first MLB start. The 25-year-old righty has been solid with Triple-A Lehigh Valley this year, going 1-1 with a 2.28 ERA and 44 strikeouts across 47 1/3 innings in 14 appearances (10 starts).

Meanwhile, the Cubs are running it back with Hayden Wesneski, who’s made just four starts in 21 games. Wesneski has been decent more often than not in 2024, however, he’s allowed seven earned runs and four homers with seven walks in his last eight inning. He also hasn’t won an appearance since April 25 and hasn’t pitched five innings since May 8.

How long will Cubs RHP Hayden Wesneski last on the mound tonight?

With the ways the Cubs have performed lately, I’m taking the Phillies to win. Even with the injuries piling up, Philadelphia is still the MLB’s best team and has more than enough talent to upset Chicago on the road.

Keeping that in mind, we’ll also back the Phillies on the moneyline. Again, they’re the better team here and proved that last year by going 5-1 SU against the Cubs. Expect history to repeat itself at Wrigley Field.

Best Phillies vs Cubs MLB Player Prop (7/2)

With Harper and Schwarber sidelined, I’m taking Nick Castellanos o0.5 runs + RBIs (-132) for the best Phillies vs. Cubs player prop bet.

Castellanos has been playing his best baseball of the season lately. In his last 13 games, the two-time MLB All-Star is slashing .380/.429/.600 while racking up 19 hits, two homers, four runs, and 12 RBIs — including when he racked up three RBIs in his last game. That’s without mentioning how he also has five RBIs and two runs in his last three trips to Wrigley Field (2.3 R+R per game).

With Wesneski not exactly being the Cubs’ most reliable arm, Castellanos has a terrific opportunity to continue his red-hot run.

Best Phillies vs. Cubs MLB Prop Bet: Nick Castellanos o0.5 Runs + RBIs (-132)
