France vs Spain, Men’s Olympic Soccer Gold Medal Match: Best Bets (8/9)
Olympic Soccer is coming to a close, and the Men’s Gold Medal Match happens tomorrow at 12:00pm Eastern with our hosts, France, taking on the young legs of Spain. Both teams have been very dominant all tournament long, however Spain did lose in group stage to Egypt and finished 2nd. France has not lost in the Olympics yet, winning all 5 matches, but needed Extra Time against Egypt in the Semifinals. Both teams have been scoring at will, and we are in for a thriller tomorrow.
Our hosts swept their group with ease, beating the United States and New Zealand 3-0, and beating Guinea 1-0. They snuck past Argentina in the Quarterfinals, escaping with a 1-0 victory, and then beat Egypt 3-1 to make the Gold Medal Match. France has looked like the best team at this Olympics, and I expect them to come out with some fire in front of their home crowd.
As for Spain, the senior team is coming off a EURO win, so it would be nice to add a Gold Medal to that collection. Spain handled Uzbekistan and the Dominican Republic before losing to Egypt and dropping to 2nd in the group. That didn’t stop them, as they routed Japan 3-0 in the Quarterfinals, and beat Morocco 2-1 in the Semifinals, after falling down 1-0 just 37 minutes into the match.
Can France continue their dominant run? Or will Spain overcome adversity again and claim the Gold?

Will Hosts Claim Gold in Paris?
France won the Gold Medal back in 1984, can they do it again?
Both France and Spain are looking for their 2nd Gold Medal in Men’s Soccer, but their first in what feels like forever. France won the tournament back in 1984, and won the Silver all the way back in 1900. After a disappointing appearance in Tokyo at the 2020 Olympic Games, the hosts will certainly come to play. Spain won Gold in Barcelona back in 1992, and have lost in the final twice since then, including last Olympics. As far as motivation goes, this team has all of it.
But only one can prevail, and I am absolutely torn on this match. Personally, I could see both attacks popping off with plenty of shots on frame, but I could also see both sides eating away at possession, forcing their opponent to chase and play defense. The best way for France to stop Spain from scoring is by not letting them have the ball at all. If I’m France, that might be my game plan. If France would be able to possess the ball for 75% of this match, they wouldn’t leave Spain any time or chances to score, but the Spanish are relentless.
Fermin Lopez has been a stud up top, scoring 3 goals in two knockout rounds matches. I would argue that Spain’s team is more talented than France, and they are more battled tested in my eyes. Spain had to beat Japan, who swept their group and didn’t allowed a goal, and Mororco, who just took 3rd beating Egypt 6-0 in the process. France had to take on Argentina, but other than that, they have had 4 relatively easy opponents. It doesn’t feel right to bet against the hosts, but it must be done.

In this match, I am simply backing who I think is the more talented team for plus money. They don’t need to win in 90 for us to cash, they just need to claim the Gold. Ultimately I think Spain comes to play and exposes France on the defensive side of things. Other than Argentina, France did not face even close to an offense as prolific as the Spanish. I do not think they are prepared for what Spain will throw at them offensively, and I do not think their back line can hold on for an entire match.
While France has been able to score, I think they struggle to do so against Spain. They couldn’t net one in the first 90 minutes against Egypt, so Spain should give them real trouble. Plus, in my mind they will be far too focused on the defensive side of the ball and containing the Spanish attack. Give me Spain to win this match in any way they choose, and for plus money this might qualify as highway robbery. Give me Spain 2-0 (+1300) in a thriller.
