Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks: Is Another Verstappen & Norris 1-2 in the Cards?
Over the last several Formula 1 races, it has become a common sight to see Max Verstappen and Lando Norris take the top two spots. Will it happen yet in again in Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix?
In five of the last six races, Verstappen and Norris have been on the top two steps of the podium. Verstappen has been on the top step four of those five times, while Norris earned the first win of his Formula 1 career at the Miami Grand Prix last month.
Another Verstappen-Norris 1-2 is a likely outcome at the Red Bull Ring after they finished first and second in qualifying. Verstappen had gone three consecutive races without starting on pole, but to the surprise of almost certainly no one, he finished with the best time in Q3 to take his eighth pole of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Norris finished second, with George Russell, Carlos Sainz Jr., and Lewis Hamilton also going under 65 seconds in Q3.
Starting Grid for the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix
- Max Verstappen
- Lando Norris
- George Russell
- Carlos Sainz Jr.
- Lewis Hamilton
- Charles Leclerc
- Oscar Piastri
- Sergio Perez
- Esteban Ocon
- Nico Hulkenberg
- Daniel Ricciardo
- Kevin Magnussen
- Pierre Gasly
- Yuki Tsunoda
- Fernando Alonso
- Alexander Albon
- Lance Stroll
- Valtteri Bottas
- Logan Sargeant
- Guanyu Zhou
Verstappen also padded his prodigious points lead with a victory in the day’s sprint race, with Oscar Piastri beating out McLaren teammate Norris for second.
Entering Sunday’s race, Verstappen now holds a 71-point lead over Norris, with Charles Leclerc a further six points back.
Will he head into next week’s British Grand Prix with an even bigger advantage? That’s the way the tea leaves read. Austrian Grand Prix odds have Verstappen as a heavy favorite to win the race for a record fifth time and capture his eighth win in 11 races this season.

Austrian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks
With Verstappen not finishing on pole for the Monaco Grand Prix, Canadian Grand Prix, and Spanish Grand Prix, there were some good value opportunities that aren’t available this weekend with him back in his familiar spot on the starting grid.
That said, there are still some good options. If you want to get in on some “Who will have the fastest lap at the Austrian Grand Prix?” action, Verstappen (+120) is a strong bet.
He has had the fastest lap only twice thus far in the 2024 Formula 1 season (Bahrain Grand Prix and Japanese Grand Prix), but he has had the fastest lap in three of his previous four Austrian Grand Prix wins and in each of the last three editions of this race, including the 2022 edition that was won by Leclerc.
Recent Austrian Grand Prix Winners
- 2023: Max Verstappen
- 2022: Charles Leclerc
- 2021: Max Verstappen
- 2020: Valtteri Bottas
- 2019: Max Verstappen
- 2018: Max Verstappen
- 2017: Valtteri Bottas
- 2016: Lewis Hamilton
- 2015: Nico Rosberg
- 2014: Nico Rosberg
Beyond that, there is only one play—well, two, but they’re separate plays reliant on the same outcome, so it’s more or less one play—that sticks out for me value wise.
Sergio Perez has missed out on the podium in five consecutive Formula 1 races, and for that streak to end at the Red Bull Ring, he will have to make a serious move from his starting spot of eighth.
That will take some doing, but I do like his chances to earn a top-six finish, which would be an improvement given he has finished eighth, DNF, DNF, and eighth in his last four races. Perez to finish in the top six and Red Bull to have a double top-six day both come in at +125, so you can take either or double dip if you’re feeling especially confident that Perez can shake off his recent run of results. It wouldn’t be a great look for Perez to have a poor finish in his team’s home race, so moving up even a couple of spots could be a good outcome for both him and for Formula 1 bettors.
If you’re looking for some additional action and don’t mind some juice, Hamilton (-140) to post a better finish than Leclerc (+110) is a good option. Hamilton has posted his two best results of the season in his last two races and scored his first podium of 2024 last weekend in Spain, and he will start the Austrian Grand Prix in an advantageous position, at least when with regards to this particular bet.
