NASCAR Cup Series Coke Zero Sugar 400 Predictions & Picks: Will Byron Do the Double at Daytona?

Only two opportunities remain to clinch spots in the NASCAR Cup Series championship playoffs, and that could set the stage for a dramatic night at Daytona, the site of tonight’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 (7:30 pm ET, NBC).

On Monday, the regular season championship race took a major turn, as Tyler Reddick won the weather-delayed FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

While Reddick held off William Byron for his second win of the season, Chase Elliott finished 15th and Kyle Larson came in 34th due to an incident in the second stage. As a result, Reddick now sits atop the points standings, ten points ahead of Elliott and 32 ahead of Larson.

More twists could be ahead for that race tonight, but a lot of eyes will also be on the race for the last few playoff spots.

With Austin Dillon’s appeal for playoff eligibility being denied, Austin Cindric is currently the only driver outside of the top 16 currently in line for a playoff spot.

Current NASCAR Cup Series Points Standings (Through 24 of 26 Regular Season Races)

Drivers in bold have won at least one race this season.

  • Tyler Reddick – 814
  • Chase Elliott – 804
  • Kyle Larson – 782
  • Ryan Blaney – 732
  • William Byron – 728
  • Denny Hamlin – 711
  • Christopher Bell – 703
  • Martin Truex Jr. – 682
  • Brad Keselowski – 677
  • Ty Gibbs – 644
  • Alex Bowman – 627
  • Chris Buescher – 621
  • Ross Chastain – 606
  • Bubba Wallace – 605
  • Joey Logano – 561
  • Daniel Suarez – 526

If a driver outside of that top 16 wins either tonight or at next week’s Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington, they will be in the playoffs.

The front few rows of tonight’s starting lineup are occupied by drivers looking to do that. That includes Front Row Motorsports duo Michael McDowell and Todd Gilliland, who are starting in the front row.

In the first three rows, the only driver currently locked into the playoffs is Logano, who will start third. Joining McDowell, Gilliland, and Logano in the front three rows are the Stewart-Haas Racing trio of Ryan Preece (fourth), Josh Berry (fifth), and Chase Briscoe (sixth), who are looking to ensure that SHR has some Round of 16 representation in the team’s last season as a four-car Cup operation.

Coke Zero Sugar 400 Predictions & Picks

  • Bubba Wallace to finish in the top ten (+115 at Bovada): Wallace finished fifth in this year’s Daytona 500, and he has five top-five finishes at Daytona in 14 career Cup starts. After finishing 26th at Michigan, he needs a strong week to bolster his position, and his chances to do so are good even though he will start 18th. Taking a top-ten finish is a fairly conservative move all things considered, but don’t be surprised if he ends up near the front.
  • Tyler Reddick to finish in the top ten (+140 at Bovada): Reddick will start 25th, and these races are rather unpredictable. But as hot as he has been, there’s no reason not to jump all over this one.
  • Chase Briscoe to finish in the top ten (+200 at Bovada): Briscoe finished tenth in this year’s Daytona 500, and of the three SHR drivers in the front three rows, he stands out as the likeliest to be there at the end.
  • William Byron to win: Byron, the winner of the 2024 Daytona 500, hasn’t won since picking up three wins in the season’s first eight races and has had back-to-back top fives only once in 2024. But as unpredictable as these races can be, a driver who has won multiple times at Daytona is a good shout.
