Cardinals vs Cubs Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/2)
Momentum is on the Cubs’ side following a tremendous comeback effort on Thursday night. The Cardinals appeared to be soaring to victory with a 4-2 lead in the ninth inning, however, the Cubs scored three unanswered runs — including a walk-off double from pinch-hitter Mike Tauchman — to open the series with a 5-4 win.
Even though Chicago was victorious, St. Louis still has the edge in the season series, having won six of the 10 matchups thus far. Conversely, last night’s loss continued a trend for the visitors. After all, the Cardinals are now just 2-5 SU on their last seven trips to Wrigley Field, being outscored 30-21 on aggregate along the way. They’re only averaging 2.4 runs in their last five road games against the Cubs.
Chicago is also 4-2 SU in its last six games as it’s finally starting to build momentum following the MLB All-Star Break. The same can’t be said for St. Louis, which is 3-5 SU across its last eight outings.
The Cubs have begun building momentum over the last week.
As for today’s starting pitchers, the Cardinals are rolling with Erick Fedde. The 31-year-old right-handed hurler has been great since returning from Korea ahead of the 2024 MLB season, going 7-4 with a 3.11 ERA through 21 starts. Having said that, Fecke will be looking to rebound after allowing three earned runs on six hits in four innings during a 6-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.
The Cubs, on the other hand, will be starting Javier Assad. The Mexican hurler has been great at Wrigley Field this season, pitching to a 2.20 ERA with 37 strikeouts across 45 innings in nine home appearances.
Unfortunately, he hasn’t had much luck against the Cardinals. In two starts against St. Louis this season, Assad has given up seven earned runs, four homers, and five walks in just 7 1/3 innings, resulting in a putrid 8.59 ERA.
Will the Cardinals’ batters take advantage of Cubs RHP Javier Assad’s recent struggles against the franchise?
I see St. Louis picking up the win this afternoon. The Cardinals were on their way to beating the Cubs last night before Ryan Helsley blew the lead in an instant. They’ll be determined to bounce back from that loss, which is more than doable given Assad’s lack of results against the Cards this season. It’ll be another close-fought game, however, a revenge-fueled St. Louis club has what it takes to emerge with the W.
Keeping simple with the best bet, let’s take the Cardinals to score over 3.5 runs. St. Louis is rolling with an average of 7.3 runs in its last three games while Chicago has surrendered a 5.3-run average in its four previous contests. Let’s also not overlook how the Cardinals have hit the Over on this market in three of their last four meetings with the Cubs.
Considering how their batters have Assad’s number in spades, I expect a productive offensive showing from Oliver Marmol’s squad.

If you’ve been following the Cardinals, you know that Goldschmidt is on a tear at the moment. The former NL MVP is slashing .349/.364/.698 in his last 11 games (43 at-bats) while racking up 15 hits, three doubles, and four home runs. He’s amassed 30 total bases during this run (2.7) and has finished with the Over on this prop eight times — including when he tallied seven TBs less than 24 hours ago. The Over is also 2-0 in his last two trips to Wrigley Field.
The icing on the cake here is that Goldschmith is batting .333 with three hits and two HRs in nine career ABs vs. Assad.
