Even though Alabama’s legendary college coach Nick Saban retired last offseason, their quarterback, Jalen Milroe, is set to have a phenomenal season.
Milroe had initially endured a rough start last year, but after being benched during the game against Texas, he came back stronger and showed remarkable growth. This improvement played a significant role in the Crimson Tide’s winning streak, which lasted until they faced a tough defeat against Michigan in the College Football Playoff. Throughout this journey to the College Football Playoff spot, Milroe’s progress was clearly visible. He significantly outperformed his counterparts from Tennessee, LSU, and exceptionally from Georgia in the SEC Championship. Many Alabama supporters felt it was unjust that he was not included in the Heisman Trophy ceremony.
This year could see a total shift in the narrative. With Kalen DeBoer now at the helm, the anticipation for Milroe and the Alabama football team is soaring. DeBoer’s impressive track record includes his work with Michael Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies offense in 2023. To jog your memory, Penix Jr. racked up 4,903 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and a coveted invitation to the Heisman ceremony.
This season, Alabama ranks in the top ten for players making a return, led by key performers such as running back Justin Haynes and offensive linemen Parker Brailsford and Tyler Booker. Additionally, Alabama holds the third-highest transfer portal ranking, having successfully recruited one five-star and seven four-star players. Despite Saban’s absence, this Alabama team is poised to remain formidable.

The journey for Milroe to the Heisman won’t be a walk in the park, facing a series of challenging encounters with #1 Georgia on home turf, #15 Tennessee in Rocky Top, #13 LSU in Baton Rouge, and the SEC’s newest addition #16 Oklahoma in Norman. However, considering Milroe’s development in 2023 and the trials and tribulations the Crimson Tide has faced, 2024 is poised to be a standout year for the burgeoning quarterback. Under DeBoer’s mentorship, he’s well-positioned for an exceptional season.
I usually avoid betting on the favorites in award futures. However, the odds on Milroe are too enticing to disregard. None of the other contenders have the same appeal to me as he does.
