Barcelona player ratings vs Athletic Club: Lamine Yamal lights up Blaugrana's home opener as relentless Robert Lewandowski makes it two wins from two for Hansi Flick
The teenager opened the scoring on Saturday before the Poland international netted the winner after twice hitting the woodwork
Barcelona opened their La Liga campaign with a 2-1 win over Valencia and will have been acutely aware that Real Madrid dropped points on the opening weekend, so Hansi Flick's side were out to record another morale-boosting victory against Athletic Bilbao to put further daylight between themselves and their eternal rivals, even if it is only matchday two.
Lamine Yamal, perhaps unsurprisingly, was the man to open the scoring for Barcelona, taking aim from the edge of the box and firing, with his effort deflected in via Yeray.
Robert Lewandowski hit the bar before, on 40 minutes, Bilbao screamed for a penalty as Pau Cubarsi appeared to bring down Alejandro Berenguer. Barcelona actually broke and appealed for a penalty of their own, but VAR intervened and a spot-kick was awarded to the away team. Oihand Sancet stepped up to score and bring Bilbao level.
Having hit the bar, Lewandowski also rattled the post early in the second half. Having been found six yards out and unmarked, he somehow managed to direct his header against the woodwork.
In the 74th minute, though, he finally had his goal; Alex Padilla parried Pedri's cross into the box but it fell at the feet of the Pole, who lashed the ball home.
Barca were able to see the victory out with a minimum of fuss, and now have two wins from their opening two games under Hansi Flick.
