Legendary hockey reporter Stan Fischler writes a weekly scrapbook for NHL.com. Fischler, also known as “The Hockey Maven,” brings his insight and humor to readers every Wednesday. This week, Stan zeroes in on one his favorite features, “A Picture Is Worth 100 Words.”

Despite my upbringing in Brooklyn, I developed a fondness for the Leafs in 1942, and one day stumbled upon a newsstand on West 43rd Street that sold out-of-town newspapers. To my surprise, they even stocked the Globe and Mail from Toronto.

I was captivated by all the Leafs coverage that I would never have found in the New York papers. Consequently, I subscribed and began receiving this fantastic newspaper daily, albeit a day late.

I was eager to read the story about the Globe Cup win. The highlight was Nat Turofsky’s photograph which captured the commencement of the Leafs’ festivities, with Harry Watson, Wild Bill Ezinicki – my most favored Leaf – and Syl Apps, who I look up to, all featured.
