John Tortorella and David Quinn have been appointed as assistant coaches for the United States in the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.

They become part of coach Mike Sullivan’s staff alongside John Hynes.

“Our team is led by an extremely skilled coaching staff and we’re thrilled about the group,” stated Bill Guerin, the general manager of Minnesota Wild and the U.S. GM for the 4 Nations Face-Off. “Their individual and collective experiences will greatly contribute to our country’s goal of winning a championship in February.”

The first-ever 4 Nations Face-Off tournament will exclusively feature NHL players representing the U.S., Canada, Finland, and Sweden. The competition is scheduled from February 12 to 20, during which seven games will be played over nine days. The venues for the tournament will be TD Garden in Boston and Bell Centre in Montreal.

Heading into his third season as the coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, Tortorella holds the ninth spot in NHL history with 742 victories, and the eighth spot with 1,512 games over 22 seasons. His coaching career includes stints with the Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, Tampa Bay Lightning, and New York Rangers. Notably, he secured a Stanley Cup victory with the Lightning in 2004 and was twice awarded the Jack Adams Trophy as NHL coach of the year in 2004 and 2017.

The individual, aged 66, has an impressive coaching history including leading the U.S. team in the 2008 IIHF World Championship and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Additionally, they served as an assistant coach in the 2005 World Championship.

For six seasons with the Lightning, Rangers, and Canucks, Sullivan served as an assistant under Tortorella.

Quinn is beginning his inaugural season as Sullivan’s assistant with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Previously, he coached the San Jose Sharks but was dismissed on April 24 following a 41-98-25 record over two seasons. In addition, he spent three seasons coaching the Rangers and has an overall career record of 137-185-50.

The 58-year-old served as the U.S. coach at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, as well as the 2022 and 2023 World Championships. He also provided assistance for the U.S. team at the World Championships on three other occasions – in 2007, 2012, and 2016.

On May 18, Sullivan, who is about to begin his 10th season as the Penguins coach, was appointed as the U.S. coach for the 4 Nations Face-Off. Hynes, who is soon starting his second season as the coach for the Wild, was made an assistant on June 11.

Forwards Jack Eichel (Vegas Golden Knights), Auston Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Matthew Tkachuk (Florida Panthers), and defensemen Adam Fox (New York Rangers), Quinn Hughes (Vancouver Canucks) and Charlie McAvoy (Boston Bruins) were the first six players named to the U.S. roster, on June 28. The remainder of the roster, which will consist of 23 NHL players (20 skaters, three goalies) will be named later this year.
