Canucks Announce Changes to Goaltending Coaching and Development

Marko Torenius has been promoted to the NHL, while Ian Clark assumes a new role.

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that Development Coach and Goaltending Coach of the Abbotsford Canucks Marko Torenius, has been promoted to Goaltending Coach of the Vancouver Canucks. Current Head Goalie Coach and Director of Goaltending Ian Clark asked for a new position with the team and will now work as a goalie scout and goaltending development coach.

Allvin stated, “Ian approached me with a need to transition away from his ice-based role, and we immediately sought a solution. We were lucky to have Marko ready to step up as our new goaltending coach in Vancouver, given Clarkie’s desire for a new role in the hockey club. Ian’s regular on-ice activity may have ended, but his expertise will be put to good use in this new role. Also, having Clarkie on talent scouting and development will significantly benefit the organization.”

For the last two seasons, Torenius has been working with the AHL Canucks as a Goaltending Coach and a Goaltending Development coach for other Canucks prospects. Before this, he was stationed in Abbotsford, serving as the Goaltending Coach for SKA St. Petersburg in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) from 2014-2022. Prior to his stint with SKA, Torenius dedicated parts of two seasons as the Goaltending Coach for KHL’s Sibir Novosibirsk, and also held the role of Team Manager and Goaltending Coach for the Espoo Blues of the SM-liiga for seven seasons.

Clark is presently serving his second tenure with the organization, having rejoined in July 2018 and extended his contract for multiple years in June 2021. Prior to his current position in Vancouver, he dedicated seven seasons to the Columbus Blue Jackets organization. Born in Vancouver, Clark was part of the Canucks’ coaching staff from 2002 to 2010. From 2003 to 2006, he was also a member of Team Canada’s coaching staff at the World Junior Championships, where they clinched silver in 2003 and 2004 and gold in 2005 and 2006. In addition, he provided consultation services for the Florida Panthers in the 2001-2002 season and Sweden’s MoDo Hockey club.
