Russell Wilson on Justin Fields playing a 'Slash' role for Steelers: 'I think it would strike fear in some defenses'

If Russell Wilson wins the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback gig to open the season, the club could still get Justin Fields reps with a few designed plays each game.

Wilson seemed receptive to the concept of having two quarterbacks or giving up a few plays to Fields if that’s how the situation unfolded.

“Justin is obviously one of the most talented guys in the NFL,” Wilson told Tim Benz of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Wednesday. “You know all the things he can do. The player, the quarterback that he is. He’s dynamic. It’s all about us winning. That’s the focus. I think it would strike fear in some defenses, that’s for sure.”

Fields revealed earlier in the week that he was willing to take on a role similar to that of Kordell Stewart’s “slash”, according to The Tribune-Review. However, his current focus is on competing with Wilson for the starting position. Fields further stated that at this stage of the offseason, the Steelers have not yet incorporated any trick plays while they adapt to the new system of OC Arthur Smith.

Fields is a force to be reckoned with, having rushed for 2,220 yards and 14 touchdowns over three seasons in Chicago, carrying the ball 356 times. However, during his time with the Bears, he was never targeted as a receiver.

Wilson stated that due to Fields’ skill, having another quarterback on the field wouldn’t seem too contrived.

“Justin is a franchise quarterback. He is capable of accomplishing numerous impressive feats. Thus, we possess two dynamic individuals with the ability to perform an array of special things,” stated Wilson.

At the moment, Wilson and Fields are competing for the starting position. It’s plausible that Fields may begin in a “Slash-type” role and, similar to Stewart, eventually become a starter in Pittsburgh.
