Rookie QB Caleb Williams on Bears' offense: I tell myself every day 'we're going to be pretty good'

The Chicago Bears concluded minicamp on Thursday, ending offseason group work with veterans. The next stop on this elevated train to Week 1 is training camp in July, where we’ll get a better look at Caleb Williams and a rejuvenated offense.

Reports suggest that Williams experienced highs and lows during OTAs and minicamp, however, the No. 1 overall pick remains focused on future opportunities.

“Absolutely, it’s quite impressive,” stated Williams, according to the team’s official transcript. “I sense that there’s hope at the end of our journey. Currently, we’re industriously working and developing, with me personally cherishing those reflective moments. I reassure myself daily, ‘We’re going to excel.’ We just need to maintain our momentum, keep pushing. We’re all thrilled. It’s crucial to have this mentality, but also to adopt the attitude of ‘Let’s persist, let’s continue to work hard, let’s strive for more.'”

The Bears made massive strides in upgrading their receiving corps this offseason, adding Keenan Allen and first-round pick Rome Odunze to DJ Moore. The offensive line looks better on paper. Overall, it’s a much better situation than the one Justin Fields walked into in Chicago.

How quickly Williams develops into a difference-making passer will be the key.

Head coach Matt Eberflus appreciates the rookie quarterback’s ability to learn from his early mistakes. He stated that Williams’ experience of facing the first-team defense during minicamp was crucial to his development.

Eberflus commented, “While we could change the approach to have the first team play against the second, and vice versa, I don’t favor that method.” He believes strongly in Caleb’s talent and his potential to reach where he needs to in the game. “I want him to consistently see our defense’s varying tactics. This exposure will make him more prepared when facing other teams, giving him a sense of familiarity. We plan to maintain this approach,” Eberflus added.

The rookie, Williams, has a better shot at immediate success in 2024 due to the talented team surrounding him, unlike former Bears quarterbacks. Chicago fans are also hopeful for a different outcome this time.
