Rob Gronkowski saw Jerod Mayo's coaching future years ago: 'You could always tell'

New England’s decision to promote Jerod Mayo to head coach may have raised some eyebrows among the football-viewing audience, but not for those who knew Mayo as a player and assistant coach.

More than a decade ago, Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski, former teammates on the Patriots, anticipated it.

“Jerod Mayo was just a phenomenon on the football field with lining every one up and also in the meeting rooms as well,” Gronkowski said during an appearance on Edelman’s Games With Names podcast. “He knew where every player needed to be during any situation that occurred on the defensive side of the ball.

He had the ability to interpret offenses, the knack for timing play calls perfectly, and his predictions were invariably accurate. If not, he was simply alerting the entire defense about the timing of the upcoming play. He was perpetually vigilant, a trait that was evidently going to be carried forward into his future endeavors.

Mayo’s change from playing to coaching wasn’t instantaneous. It took him almost three years to become a part of the Patriots’ team as an inside linebackers coach. However, the qualities that led him to become a Pro Bowler revealed themselves quickly. After five years of assisting, the Patriots identified him as the successor for Bill Belichick upon his departure, positioning Mayo as their forthcoming leader.

The mental aspect often distinguishes good from great in top-level sports, and New England is relying on this strength for Mayo in his new position. For anyone seeking further evidence, Gronkowski is available for questioning.

“Gronkowski spoke of Mayo, stating, “His gameplay improved because he knew where to be on the football field. Being in the right position to make a play can enhance one’s performance significantly.”

Still not satisfied? Consider Edelman, who only made brief appearances on defense in the 2011 season and didn’t feel at ease in his role until he confirmed with Mayo.

“Looking to Jerod was always a must for me,” Edelman said. “I was aware of what was required, but I would always seek Jerod’s endorsement, because his confirmation meant that it was correct.”

The Patriots have become a bit of a rudderless ship since the departure of Tom Brady, making just one playoff appearance from 2020-2023 and parting with Belichick after last season. They’re hoping Mayo is the man to get them back on course, and if Gronkowski is to be believed, they’ve made a well-informed decision.

“Gronkowski said, “Jerod Mayo was the Tom Brady of the defense.”

In the coming year(s), we’ll find out if that will transform the Patriots back into a winning team.
