Rams QB Matthew Stafford seeking adjusted contract with more guaranteed money
Matthew Stafford‘s in the market for a little more guaranteed compensation from the Los Angeles Rams.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday that Stafford is looking for a revision to his contract to secure more guaranteed cash beyond the 2024 season.
Rapoport mentioned that the veteran quarterback, who feels he still has a lot left to give, has been participating in voluntary practices. However, his presence is a lingering offseason concern that the Rams are struggling to feel satisfied with.
Stafford, 36, is entering his 16th NFL season and fourth with the Rams, whom he captained to a Super Bowl victory in the 2021 season. Having signed a four-year, $160 million extension in the spring of 2022 following the team’s Super Bowl triumph, Stafford has three more seasons left on his contract, but just $31 million remaining in guaranteed salary this year and none over the final two seasons, per Over the Cap.
Stafford is evidently seeking additional financial security before his guarantees expire.
Stafford is still praised for his toughness, evidenced by his record of not missing a single game for the Detroit Lions from 2011 to 2018. However, injuries have plagued him in the last two seasons, causing him to miss 10 games during that period.
Despite this, he demonstrated last year that he can still compete with the best, accumulating 3,965 yards and 24 touchdowns in 15 games. However, it was not just his statistics that were impressive, but also the throws he consistently made, which amazed spectators nearly every week.
Rams general manager Les Snead has another significant task to add to his to-do list, with two more days left in the 2024 NFL Draft.
