Justin Herbert: Chargers rookie WR Ladd McConkey 'picked up the offense so easily'
The Los Angeles Chargers are counting on rookie receiver Ladd McConkey hitting the ground running in Year 1. So far, so good for the second-round pick.
During offseason workouts last month, quarterback Justin Herbert glowed about the strides McConkey had already made learning the new offense.
“He’s just picked up the offense so easily. It’s like he’s been a four- or five-year vet,” Herbert said, via Kris Rhim of ESPN. “He understands the game.”
The praise from the starting QB is significant, since the rookie is set to receive numerous targets in Greg Roman’s run-priority offense.
The Chargers parted ways with veterans Keenan Allen and Mike Williams during the offseason, putting McConkey, Josh Palmer, Quentin Johnston and D.J. Chark atop the receiver corps. Health will be key for McConkey to reach his rookie potential after getting nicked up last season.
If McConkey continues to make strides, his excellent route-running and YAC ability could give him a chance to lead L.A. in receiving from the start of his NFL career.
