Eagles' Brandon Graham 'expecting big things' from new addition Saquon Barkley

Saquon Barkley‘s move to Philadelphia was just the latest example of the classic, made-for-TV switching of sides in a rivalry.

Veteran Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham is just glad he doesn’t have to chase Barkley around the field anymore.

“You just can’t let him hit the hole, that’s the biggest thing,” Graham said Monday, via the New York Post. “Once he hits the hole, he’s a home run hitter. I know for Saquon, he always was the guy you don’t want to see with daylight.”

Entering the 2024 offseason, it was unlikely Barkley would remain with the Giants, who chose to pay quarterback Daniel Jones $160 million over four years in 2023 while franchise tagging Barkley to keep him in New York. After a season played under the tag, Barkley solicited offers from outside suitors. A familiar foe won out, luring Barkley across the Delaware River to Philadelphia.

Graham still can’t believe his eyes.

“Graham, chuckling, said, “For the Giants fans, it was a tough blow, akin to us losing our main player. I recognize that business is business, but I’m certain Saquon is eager for this season.”

Barkley’s move was the latest result of a running back market in which only a small group of players receive more than $10 million per year. After signing a three-year, $37.75 million deal with the Eagles, we can count Barkley among them.

Barkley’s exit might be perceived as a silver lining by Giants fans. The running back position typically doesn’t attract major investment from most teams, given the proven low durability of many who undertake this role. Investing heavily in this area might not be a smart move in 2024, but that’s not to say Barkley’s performance will instantly plummet — even if Giants fans are hastily reassuring themselves of this to ease their disappointment.

“Graham acknowledged the anger amongst individuals about the situation. “They’re hoping it leads nowhere. I’m aware of the extent of their fury,” he stated.

Barkley’s career path has experienced both peaks and troughs. He made an early impact in his career, but injuries interrupted his progress. It was only after an unexpectedly successful 2022, which saw the Giants make the playoffs, that people began to take Barkley seriously again.

The Giants weren’t convinced enough to retain Barkley with a substantial payment. He’s now earning a substantial salary with a team that holds greater expectations. Graham is eagerly anticipating the outcomes.

“You’ll have to discover for yourself,” Graham stated. “I don’t want to make any predictions, but I’m aware that we possess a strong team and I anticipate great results.”
