Dolphins LB David Long Jr.: Defense 'reloading' in 2024

This offseason saw significant changes in the defense of the Miami Dolphins.

Coordinator Vic Fangio is out. Anthony Weaver is in. Christian Wilkins, Xavien Howard, Emmanuel Ogbah, Jerome Baker and Raekwon Davis are all gone, either lost in free agency or released. Jordan Poyer, Calais Campbell, Jordyn Brooks and Anthony Walker Jr. were added to the mix, and Miami drafted first-round pass rusher Chop Robinson.

Despite the big changes, linebacker David Long Jr. sees a group that can make noise in the AFC East.

“Yes sir, we’ve got a lot of dogs coming in, some dogs already there,” Long told Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston during a recent youth football camp. “We’re just reloading. I think the most important thing when it comes to new players and new coaches is the chemistry that comes with time. We built something. The next step is to go to training camp and build from that.”

Along with the additions, Miami still boasts playmakers like Long, Jalen Ramsey, Jevon Holland and Zach Sieler. Key edge rushers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb coming off season-ending injuries add another element of question marks heading into the season.

Long is emerging from his inaugural season in Miami, during which he established a career record with 113 total tackles, including nine for loss, and achieved his first regular-season sack. As a linebacker capable of playing both offensively and defensively, Long is expected to integrate well into Weaver’s strategy.

“New system, new coaches, just like last year,” Long commented. “It was somewhat challenging to find a rhythm, particularly earlier in the year when I wasn’t playing much. Currently, I’m in a place where I feel comfortable. I’m back to where I should be. At present, everything is as it should be. The team chemistry, my health, which is vital to me, and my mental well-being, all are in a good place,” he added.

Under Mike McDaniel, the Dolphins offense is poised to be dynamic once more. Miami could become a strong contender in the AFC in 2024, if the defense can enhance its performance from last year’s inconsistent showing and maintain good health.
