Davante Adams 'locked in with' Raiders, but if he were to be 'reunited with anybody, it would be Aaron' Rodgers
Wide receiver Davante Adams remains committed to the Las Vegas Raiders, but he recently opened up about the intriguing trade rumors with the New York Jets that continue to circulate and a possible reunion with his former Green Bay Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.
Appearing on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, which dropped Wednesday, Adams emphasized his commitment to the Raiders, piggybacking off previous statements last week that he’s satisfied with head coach Antonio Pierce running the team full-time now.
Adams stated, “I am currently a dedicated member of the Raiders. How can I be here discussing about joining another team? That’s my feeling even now. I am fully committed to the Raiders and I hold a positive perspective towards this team. As far as my knowledge goes, they share the same sentiments about me.
If there comes a time when they no longer feel the same way, it wouldn’t mean I’m finished playing. We would, of course, work out whatever needs to be resolved.
Rodgers might have lit the match to the simmering rumors, saying last week at a Lake Tahoe, Nevada, golf tournament: “I love Davante. Can’t wait to play with him — again.” Then former Jets QB Boomer Esiason said on WFAN’s Boomer & Gio show that he was hearing an Adams trade to the Jets could be in the works this summer.
Adams’ agents issued a statement on Tuesday blasting any talk of the receiver being traded as “baseless, unfounded speculation,” shooting down the idea that there has even been any discussion between the teams toward that end.
Adams, 31, is entering Year 3 of his five-year, $140 million contract. Things haven’t gone completely smoothly in his Raiders tenure after being traded from Green Bay. His first QB reunion, with his college quarterback Derek Carr, lasted only one season in Las Vegas before Carr was released and signed with the Saints the following offseason.
Rodgers and Adams formed an incredible partnership for eight years with the Packers. Adams confessed that if the Raiders decided to let him go, there’s one quarterback he’d prefer to team up with. You guessed it right!
Adams responded to Sharpe, “I would phrase my answer this way: If there’s anyone I’d want to be reunited with, it would be Aaron.” He then clarified that he’s not currently pursuing this.
The Raiders are expected to let 2023 fifth-rounder Aidan O'Connell and free-agent signee Gardner Minshew battle for the starting QB job in Vegas.
In their eight seasons together in Green Bay, Adams and Rodgers amassed 669 receptions, 8,121 yards, and 73 touchdowns. Given this, it’s easy to envision what their second stint together might look like.
“Clearly, the idea of playing alongside Aaron is fantastic,” said Adams. “I’ve already experienced it, which parallels my reasons for coming here and reuniting with Derek – because I was familiar with him.
Having that gives you a touch more confidence than starting anew with someone you’ve never played with, especially when they’re considered the best to have ever played the game – at least, that’s my opinion. I’m not sure about your thoughts, but that’s definitely my perspective. Besides, it’s given me a chance, thanks to Rodgers, to display my capabilities to the world.
