Cowboys' Mike McCarthy says QB Dak Prescott having his 'best offseason program'
Mike McCarthy offered glowing praise of Dak Prescott‘s offseason on Wednesday.
Despite a looming contract situation and a lack of splashy improvements in free agency, McCarthy sees the quarterback as having the best spring of any year since the coach took over in 2020.
“I think Dak is having his best offseason program that we’ve had,” McCarthy told reporters on Wednesday, via the team’s official website. “This atmosphere that we’ve practiced in with the quarterback and receivers has really hit the mark. I’ve been very impressed with the quality of work.”
From the outside, the comment sounds hollow. On paper, the Cowboys failed to upgrade their talent, top receiver CeeDee Lamb hasn’t participated in workouts, and the narrative surrounding Dallas is that the club is going through the motions. However, McCarthy said that Prescott’s leadership has filled all the gaps.
“McCarthy said that the quarterback’s connection in the perimeter realm has been a significant part of our physical activity and it has improved. He added that the receivers are playing with increased urgency and are getting more reps, which has enhanced their timing. He emphasized, however, that the real challenge will come during training camp.”
Prescott concurs with McCarthy’s evaluation of his offseason, for his part.
Prescott said, “I concur because it’s the effort and dedication I put into this game. The significance this game holds for me is immense. Every offseason, I discuss this. My primary focus is on enhancing all facets of my game and pushing my teammates to do the same. Mike’s remarks are a reflection of our collective efforts this off-season.”
At times, when external noise is intense, players inside the building can concentrate and focus on their immediate task.
The Cowboys are optimistic that Prescott will transform his “best offseason” into his “best regular season” and “best playoff run.” Following that, they will need to address his contract situation.
