Cowboys LB Eric Kendricks changes tune, happy to reunite with Mike Zimmer

Linebacker Eric Kendricks‘ tune has changed when it comes to playing for Mike Zimmer.

Kendricks criticized Zimmer’s “fear-based” coaching style in January 2022 after seven seasons with him at the Minnesota Vikings. However, upon rejoining Zimmer at Dallas in 2024, Kendricks clarified to reporters over the weekend that his prior comments were chiefly due to his frustrations from a disappointing season. He also expressed his excitement about reuniting with Zimmer, who is now the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys.

“Emotions were high,” he said of his 2022 comments, via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. “We’re very excited. It’s good to be back with him. I love his walkthroughs. I love the little ways he does things, the way he structures things, the level of detail, so I’m excited. I really am.”

Kendricks expressed enjoyment in playing for Zimmer, despite previous comments. He stated that he respected the coordinator and wouldn’t have rejoined him otherwise. The 32-year-old even turned down a contract offer from the 49ers to team up with Zimmer in Dallas.

“Indeed, I’ve always held high regard for Zim,” Kendricks expressed. “The extensive defensive knowledge I gained under his guidance was invaluable. From film analysis to game breakdowns and installations, I owe much of my learning to Zim. We had some successful years together and I am eager to carry that forward.”

Zimmer’s reputation as a demanding coach is well-known. He had a moderately successful eight-year stint in Minnesota, amassing a 72-56-1 record, two division titles, and three postseason appearances. While his coaching style may have exhausted players towards the end, it could potentially bring out their best, especially in his role as the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys.

“Indeed, life’s tough,” acknowledged Kendricks. “I have total respect for him. Our plan is to get this project underway. Just this previous weekend, I had a discussion with him. We are thrilled about having another chance to collaborate and complement each other’s efforts.”
