Cam Newton says Ravens' Lamar Jackson is greatest dual threat in NFL history: 'He's got speed that I never had'
During his prime, Cam Newton was renowned for his touchdown prowess. The ex-Panther and Patriot quarterback set a record by achieving 75 rushing touchdowns in his career spanning 11 years. Newton’s record remains unmatched, with no one even within 20 of his tally.
Although Newton possesses the ability to perform with his arm and legs, he does not consider himself the greatest dual threat in NFL history.
Asked recently on the 4th and 1 Show whether he considers himself the greatest dual threat ever, Newton responded, “No. Lamar Jackson.”
Newton pointed out Jackson’s ability to make big plays due to his speed as the distinguishing factor and even placed Michael Vick in a category separate from his own.
“Newton acknowledged that Lamar’s style is not the same as his, citing Lamar’s ability to make big plays at any time and his speed, something Newton admits he never possessed. He also expressed his admiration for Lamar, calling him a legend. Comparing his own style, Newton mentioned he plays the game with more power and although he can run, it’s likely he’ll be caught. He pointed out that players like Vick and Lamar, on the other hand, won’t be caught,” Newton said.
Vick currently holds the record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 6,109. Newton sits second with 5,631, followed by Russell Wilson at 5,307 and Jackson at 5,258. If Jackson hits his career average of 876 yards a season, he’d overtake Vick in 2024. Barring a catastrophic injury, Jackson will own the record within the next few seasons.
The Ravens quarterback, despite having 29 rushing scores, still has a significant distance to cover to even approach Newton’s record.
