Bears' Caleb Williams on unsigned rookie contract: 'I'm not handling that'
No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams has yet to ink his first NFL contract with Chicago Bears rookies set to report to training camp on Tuesday.
During an event for his Caleb Cares Foundation in South Chicago over the weekend, the quarterback told reporters that he is not worried about finalizing a deal.
“I’m not handling that,” Williams said, via the Chicago Tribune. “My lawyers and attorney and everybody, the head of the Bears, everybody up there up top is handling that. That’s not my position that I’m handling.”
Williams doesn’t have an agent certified by the NFL Players Association.
The NFL’s slotted rookie contracts offer limited negotiation points, primarily regarding signing bonus payment schedules and potential offsets.
Chicago rookies report for training camp on Tuesday in advance of participating in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game against the Houston Texans on Aug. 1.
“Approaching the end of the break, I’m immersed in training and gearing up for the return,” said Williams. “I’m extremely excited and thrilled to be back in Chicago, ready to kick things off. We’re just about three weeks away from the exhibition opener.”
Williams’ rookie-class teammate, wide receiver Rome Odunze, the No. 9 pick, also remains unsigned.
