‘Four Kings’ documentary to be aired on Amazon Prime in September

A new documentary on Amazon Prime will focus on two of the biggest British fights of the 1990s.

The show ‘Four Kings’ is set to air on Friday, September 27. It will feature Lennox Lewis’ match against Frank Bruno and the rematch between Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn.

Between October 1, 1993, and October 9, 1993, Britain became the focal point of the boxing world for an eight-day period. Four different personalities were featured at massive events hosted by Cardiff Arms Park in Wales and Old Trafford in Manchester.

The online release of the two-minute trailer for the four-part documentary was yesterday. It starts with Eubank, Lewis, Benn, and Bruno all preparing to reminisce, taking their seats.

“Eubank says, “Being a world champion requires a bit of madness, as it’s something a normal mind can’t achieve. So, if I am the world champion, wouldn’t that make me crazy?”

The Amazon press release says that Four Kings ‘Provides unprecedented access to the boxers and their families, chronicling their highs and lows as they navigated fame, fortune, jealousy, and bitter rivalries and battled each other for their place on the throne.’

When Lennox Lewis and Bruno met in Cardiff, it was Lewis’ second time defending his WBC Heavyweight title. Bruno, a beloved British sporting icon, was widely adored by the public. On the other hand, Lewis, who was also born in Britain but moved to Canada at age 12 and consequently spoke with a North American accent, had not yet received the same affection from his home country.

For the first time in the modern era, two British-born boxers, Lewis and Bruno, fought for one of the four world titles. Bruno, lacking the amateur pedigree of his opponent, was known as the almost man of British boxing. He had previously challenged for a world title twice, but was defeated by Tim Witherspoon and Mike Tyson.

Eubank and Benn had a more intense rivalry, initially battling each other at the Resorts World Arena, Birmingham in November 1990. Eubank emerged victorious in the ninth round stoppage of a memorable match, but their mutual animosity had hardly made an impact.

The documentary ‘Four Kings’ delves into the impact of mental health issues on the lives of the subjects, both within and beyond the boxing ring. Each of the ‘Four Kings’, Lewis, Bruno, Eubank, and Benn, has left their own indelible mark on the sport. Their reputations and accomplishments will continue to educate and inspire the upcoming generation of boxing enthusiasts.

Documentaries are a natural fit for boxing, a sport steeped in history, narratives, personalities, and drama. Judging from the trailer, ‘Four Kings’ could be an indispensable addition to a viewing list that includes ‘The Kings’, ‘Tapia’, ‘Legendary Nights’, ‘Kings of the Ring’, ‘When We Were Kings’, and others.

Experience a legendary period of British boxing from the perspective of those who were in the boxing gloves.
