2024 Coca-Cola 600 Predictions & Picks: Will Gibbs Grab His First Cup Win?

Ty Gibbs didn’t make his pole position count in yesterday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but if he can do so in today’s Coca-Cola 600 (6:00 pm ET, FOX), he will pick up his first Cup Series victory in one of the series’ marquee races.

In yesterday’s BetMGM 300, Gibbs started up front but finished ninth. That disappointing result could be forgotten if Gibbs can convert his first pole for a points race into his first win in a points race. Last week’s All-Star Open pole and victory are part of what has been a solid second Cup Series season for Gibbs, who is seventh in points after 13 races following a second-place finish at Darlington two weeks ago.

Sitting atop the standings is Kyle Larson, who holds a 30-point lead over Martin Truex Jr. Larson won the Coca-Cola 600 in 2021, but such a win won’t be a part of a championship run this season. Larson was attempting to do the Indianapolis 500/Coca-Cola 600 double in one day, but due to inclement weather delaying the action at Indy, he might only race at the Brickyard today.

In the immediate, that means that Justin Allgaier, who is currently fourth in the Xfinity Series standings, will drive in a Cup race for the first time since the 2022 YellaWood 500 at Talladega.

In the not-so-immediate, it means that Larson may need a waiver to be eligible for this season’s playoffs. Current rules stipulate that drivers must race in all 26 regular season races to be eligible for the playoffs.

Speaking of the playoffs, will Gibbs or another driver all but punch their ticket tonight? Last time out, Brad Keselowski did by picking up his first win in over three years.

Coca-Cola 600 Predictions & Picks

Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing have been the dominant teams thus far this season, with their drivers winning 10 of the first 13 races and currently occupying six of the top seven spots in the standings.

Will that dominance continue at Charlotte? Hendrick and JGR locked out the front three rows of the starting lineup. Joining Gibbs on the front row is William Byron, with Christopher Bell starting third, Martin Truex Jr. fourth, Chase Elliott fifth, and Alex Bowman sixth.

If you are looking for someone to back for the win, don’t look beyond those six drivers. Byron, who finished second behind Ryan Blaney in last year’s Coca-Cola 600 and leads the Cup Series with three wins this season, is my top pick out of that bunch. In addition, I am locking him in for a top-three finish (+200 at Bovada) and a top-five finish (evens at Bovada).

In a rare occurrence, top 20 finishing position odds are also available at Bovada for the Coca-Cola 600. That opens an opportunity to hit some good value spots without needing a driver to perform exceptionally well. You won’t get great odds on the bigger names, but Harrison Burton (+140), Austin Cindric (-135), and Austin Dillon (-110) are three names that stick out for me.
