Brian Belichick thankful to remain with Patriots after his father's departure

One Belichick remains in New England.

After 24 seasons with the Patriots, Bill Belichick made his exit, and his son Steve also departed, eventually finding a role at the University of Washington. However, Brian Belichick decided to remain in Foxborough, working under his father’s successor, Jerod Mayo.

“I was thankful and happy to get the opportunity to coach here and was again thankful and happy to take advantage of it,” Belichick said Wednesday, via the team’s official website. “I have a lot of a lot of gratitude in my life right now for a daughter, a job, being here, living in this area. I love it. I just hope I can contribute to help us be the best team we can this year.”

Since 2017, Brian Belichick has been a member of the Patriots coaching staff, initially starting out as an assistant. In 2020, he was promoted to the role of safeties coach, a position he continues to hold under Mayo and defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington.

Belichick expressed his pleasure, stating, “I derive immense enjoyment from coaching here, residing here, and interacting with our players daily. I’m grateful for the chance to coach a position in the National Football League. What more can one ask for? It’s been an incredible experience.”

Mayo expressed enthusiasm about the value Belichick adds to his coaching staff as the organization moves forward.

“Mayo praised his performance, saying, “He’s been fantastic. It’s been a bit uncomfortable for some other guys in the organization, but he and the others have dealt with the situation correctly. Brian is passionate about football and he loves New England. I mentioned this before: he’s a new father who enjoys living here and wants to stay. We’re pleased that he’s with us.”

Veteran safety Jabrill Peppers worked under Brian the past two seasons and added that the younger Belichick brings a unique perspective to the room.

Peppers explained, “Brian brings a unique perspective to the game, setting high standards for us, thanks to his experience coaching many exceptional DBs. And the standard is consistently maintained in our room. Our teamwork, from coaches to players in the DB room, is impressive. Our shared goal is to deliver the best performance on the field and contribute to the team’s victories.”

While it’s a new era in Foxborough, not all remnants from the previous ruling dynasty have been expelled.
