QB Jalen Hurts: '95%' of Eagles' offense is new under OC Kellen Moore
The Philadelphia Eagles brought in offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to revamp the system after last year’s struggles down the stretch. According to quarterback Jalen Hurts, the revamp is more of an overhaul.
“You get to a point where you feel, I’m going to be comfortable with this, I like this, that time comes when you can rep it, rep it, rep it later on, but right now it’s been a lot of new inventory in — the majority of it, probably 95% of it being new — and so it’s just been that process, and it’s been a fun process because you get to see what works for other people,” Hurts said on Thursday, via ESPN. “I think the goal coming in was to learn Kellen’s offense and to master it, and I think that’s been a process, and by the end of it, I want it to be mine and have it in my own way.”
Nick Sirianni, the head coach, and Moore have previously discussed their offense being a combination of the strategies they’ve both used in their careers. Hurts further explained that although the plays may resemble those Philadelphia used last year, there are adjustments in the way they’re initiated and in each player’s roles.
“Sirianni stated, “The Xs and Os, the lines on the paper, might be exactly as they should be. However, the way I instruct and detail these routes, the way I coach the quarterback, his timing, his focus, where his eyes should be looking – that’s what matters. Are receivers interpreting routes or not? Are there alerts, checks and adjustments embedded in this, or is it something the quarterback needs to handle? This is what constitutes a system.”
Eagles players have spoken highly of the new scheme during OTAs and minicamp. However, there are still some issues to iron out, as the timing has not always been on point at this stage of the offseason.
The expectation with Moore’s introduction was that his Dallas and Los Angeles experience would inject a new perspective into a system that had become outdated the previous season. Moore is anticipated to add more variety, enhance movement, and potentially have Hurts under center more frequently than last year to support the running game and play-action strategy.
The new offense of Philly will next be seen during the training camp in July, as they conclude their offseason work.
