Packers hope to extend QB Jordan Love before training camp

Last offseason, the Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love did a short extension to provide cushion during the quarterback’s first full season as the starter. After Love impressed in 2023, sides are angling for a more significant pact this summer.

General manager Brian Gutekunst acknowledged Tuesday on 97.3 The Game that they hope to complete a deal before training camp kicks off in July.

“He stated, ‘We are currently engaged in those discussions. The positive side is that, while these matters are never straightforward or swift, both parties share the same objective. We definitely aim to finalize this before the start of training camp. Both parties are eager to complete a contract extension. Having stability in that role offers a sense of security as we structure our team. We are eager to see this accomplished, even though the process may not be quick.'”

Despite ongoing contract negotiations, Love has participated in voluntary offseason workouts, a decision that’s been praised from high to low in the organization.

The extension Love received last offseason stipulates that he will earn $11 million in 2024, which is approximately $40 million less than the current market rate for high-quality quarterbacks.

It is typical to see significant quarterback deals occurring in the weeks leading up to the start of training camp, which usually commences around mid-July. Therefore, Gutekunst’s timeline is considered standard.

Thus far this offseason, Jared Goff‘s four-year, $212 million pact is the only big-money quarterback extension that’s come down the pike. Trevor Lawrence, Tua Tagovailoa and Dak Prescott join Love as other signal-callers in line for new deals. The longer clubs wait, the more expensive extensions usually become, particularly for QBs.

The Packers have unequivocally expressed their faith in Love as their future quarterback, a sentiment they’ve held since the 2020 draft night. Love demonstrated his talent last year, proving he has what it takes to continue the legacy of Pro Bowl quarterback play in Green Bay for over 30 years. The next step for both parties is to agree on a financial figure that ensures long-term satisfaction.
