New Ravens DC Zach Orr on 'ultimate chess piece' Kyle Hamilton: 'I think he's one of the top players in the league'
Amid the Baltimore Ravens’ rise to AFC North titlists and the conference’s top seed, safety Kyle Hamilton turned in a breakout campaign.
The standout from the second season excelled from sideline to sideline, filled up the box score, and was awarded All-Pro honors.
Zach Orr, his new defensive coordinator, is of the belief that this is just the beginning for Hamilton. He already sees Hamilton as one of the NFL’s top talents.
“Kyle Hamilton is the quintessential chess piece. In my opinion, he ranks among the league’s best players,” Orr expressed last week, as per the team’s transcript. “I aspire for him to be the league’s defensive MVP someday right here. I believe he possesses the requisite talent, work ethic, and character for it.”
As a rookie, Hamilton — who was taken 14th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft by Baltimore — showed promise, playing in 16 games with four starts. In 2023, he was simply sensational, though.
Hamilton, on his way to being selected for the Pro Bowl, recorded 81 tackles in 15 starts, along with four interceptions, 13 defended passes, three sacks, and 10 tackles for loss. His versatility and his ability to influence the game in every aspect is why Orr considers him a chess piece.
Orr believes that Hamilton will play a critical role in all efforts, as questions have arisen about the Ravens defense maintaining its 2023 success due to roster and staff changes.
Orr stated, “Kyle Hamilton’s versatility makes him the ultimate chess piece on the field. His ability to adapt to the offense’s moves allows him to play in any position. He can cover as a safety, deep safety, box safety, corner, nickel, backer, or even an outside linebacker. Moreover, he has proven his skills in rushing the passer. What sets Hamilton apart is his commitment and intelligence, enabling him to manage the extensive responsibilities that come with each position. As he enters his third year, he shows a keen desire to take on more roles, and it will be interesting to see how he evolves.”
