John Tortorella Named Assistant Coach for Team USA at 4 Nations Face Off
The Flyers head coach is one of four coaches appointed to the Team USA coaching roster.
Today, USA Hockey revealed that John Tortorella, Philadelphia Flyers’ Head Coach, has been appointed as the Assistant Coach for Team USA in the NHL’s 4-Nations Face-Off. The event is scheduled from Feb. 12-20 and will be held in Montreal and Boston.
The February 4-Nations Face-Off will be the fifth time that Tortorella has served as a coach for USA Hockey.
Tortorella begins the 2024-25 season ranked ninth on the all-time list of most successful coaches in NHL history and second among those born in the US. He has a rich history with USA Hockey, having most recently been the head coach for Team USA at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. In 2010, he was an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team which won a silver medal. He also led the U.S. Men’s National Team as head coach at the 2008 IIHF Men’s World Championship and was an associate coach for the U.S. team at the 2005 IIHF Men’s World Championship.
In his two seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, Tortorella secured a coaching record of 69-71-24. He surpassed Darryl Sutter on March 12, 2023, with his 738th win against San Jose, placing him ninth in NHL history. Furthermore, Tortorella made history as the eighth all-time, third active, and first U.S.-born head coach in NHL history to coach his 1500th game. This milestone was achieved on Dec. 29, 2023, in a game against Seattle.
The Boston, Massachusetts native, who has accumulated 742 wins over his 22-season career as an NHL coach, guided the Tampa Bay Lightning to their first-ever Stanley Cup victory in 2004. As of now, Tortorella is third in the ranking of active NHL coaches in terms of games coached (1547), and fourth in the number of wins (742). He also holds the eighth and ninth positions in NHL history for games coached and wins respectively.
