It shouldn’t surprise anyone to hear that 2024 is a pivotal year for Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.
First up on a checklist for Jones: Return fully healthy for football. After suffering a season-ending torn ACL in 2023, Jones has been steadily working toward getting back in time for camp, and it appears he’ll do just that this week, telling reporters Sunday he “should be ready to go.”
“I feel good. Ready to go. Ready to go for training camp,” Jones said, via ESPN. “Looking forward to next Wednesday.”
Generally speaking, this is the make-or-break year for Jones. He’s coming off a season in which he played a career-low six games and was largely ineffective in those contests. He participated in the half-dozen games just months after signing a new four-year, $160 million deal and looked nothing like the signal-caller the Giants thought they were retaining.
Jones, now in his sixth NFL season, is no longer enjoying the luxury of an affordable rookie contract, making his history of injuries and on-field difficulties less acceptable, if they are tolerated at all. In the outcome-focused world of the NFL, patience is often in short supply, and it’s unlikely to be abundant with respect to Jones beyond 2024.
The contract of Jones also permits the Giants to part ways with him in 2025, incurring only a minor financial penalty. If they decide to trade or release him after June 1st next summer, they will only bear a dead cap of $11.1 million. This provides a path for general manager Joe Schoen to explore other options if he considers it vital.
Therefore, it was crucial for Jones to be fully prepared for the camp that commences on Tuesday for the Giants veterans. Following New York’s failure to meet its objectives in 2023 under Coach Brian Daboll, the demand for success has increased, and it’s not just Jones who bears this burden.
However, as a quarterback, he’ll bear the brunt of it. Luckily, it seems like he’s physically equipped to handle it.
