Orioles vs Mets Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/21)

Following their loss in the series opener, the Orioles rebounded with a 9-5 win against the Mets on Tuesday. Baltimore’s right-handed pitcher, Dean Kremer, contributed to the victory by striking out seven batters, marking his sixth win of the year. Right Fielder Anthony Santander spearheaded the offense with his 37th home run in 2024.

It will be fascinating to observe whether yesterday’s triumph marked the start of a positive trend for Baltimore. Considering that the Orioles have only managed a 9-9 straight-up (SU) record in August and have only secured back-to-back wins once in the past 10 days, it’s clear they need a boost. Their dismal 7-9 SU record in their last nine away games certainly isn’t helping their cause.

Conversely, the Mets are not currently performing at their peak. Their recent performance has seen them lose seven out of their last 11 games, largely due to their average of only 3.8 runs per game during this period. This is a significant factor in their lack of success in the preseason. This level of performance will not be sufficient against the O’s, who have recorded the third-highest number of runs per game in the Majors.

That being said, Citi Field hasn’t been a hospitable place for visiting teams. The Orioles had suffered four straight losses in Queens prior to their victory last night, leaving us to wait and see if this was just a one-off or not.

Will the Orioles experience more rare success in Queens?

Everyone will be watching Orioles LHP Cole Irvin, as it’s his first start since June 30. The player, who was a fifth-round pick in 2016, was shifted to the bullpen in July, but his performance was disappointing. He ended up with a 9.00 ERA, having allowed 14 earned runs and four home runs on 21 hits in only 14 innings.

Furthermore, Irvin has a 2-2 record and a 5.14 ERA in his seven inter-league appearances this season, three of which were starts.

RHP Sean Manaea of the Mets has been delivering inconsistent performances lately. While he gave up six runs over 10 innings in his previous two starts, resulting in a 5.40 ERA, he also boasts a 5-0 record with a 2.03 ERA in his last five games at home. This clearly showcases the upliftment he receives from the home crowd at Citi Field. The pitcher is originally from Valparaiso, IN.

Can the Mets take advantage of Orioles LHP Cole Irvin’s struggles?

In a game that could go in either direction, I predict we’ll see a Mets victory today. Again, the Orioles have struggled to string together consecutive wins in recent weeks and Irvin’s play on the mound can’t be trusted. The Mets’ batters are talented enough to take advantage of the situation and another strong showing from Manaea will only seal the deal.

With that in mind, backing the Over on the 8-run total is the way to go. The Over is 12-6 in the Mets’ last 18 home games as well as 15-5 in the Orioles’ 20 previous road outings. Furthermore, Baltimore and New York have surpassed their projected total in 11 of the last 14 meetings, averaging a combined 11.5 runs per game.

Given that the two sides scored a total of 14 runs on Tuesday, it’s likely we’ll witness a lot of offense this afternoon.

Best Orioles vs Mets MLB Player Prop (8/21)

As he’s set to make his return to the starting rotation, I’m taking the Over on Cole Irvin’s 2.5 earned runs (-127) as today’s best Orioles vs. Mets player prop.

The Over for this prop has a favorable record of 7-2 in Irvin’s last nine appearances. The 30-year-old seasoned pitcher has had a poor performance recently with a staggering 8.72 ERA during that period and has conceded 15 earned runs over 9 2/3 innings in his last three away games. He is now set to face the Mets, who have the following rankings for the current season against left-handed pitchers:

  • Hits: 14th
  • Doubles: T-2nd
  • Home runs: T-7th
  • RBIs: 8th
  • Batting average: 9th
  • On-base %: 8th
  • Slugging %: 3rd

To put it differently, it seems Irvin is in for a challenging day considering his recent difficulties and the fact that he hasn’t initiated a game in more than a month. This makes it simple to favor the Over today.
