Ever-evolving Augustine embraces big moments, growth experiences
Last season, as a freshman, the goalie prospect for Red Wings assisted Michigan State in securing the BIG Ten title.
DETROIT – It was an unforgettable past calendar year for Detroit Red Wings goalie prospect Trey Augustine.
Augustine, who was picked No. 41 overall by the Red Wings in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, helped the United States secure a gold medal at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship held in Sweden. Following his successful freshman season at Michigan State University, the 19-year-old further expanded his horizons at the 2024 IIHF World Championship in Czechia.
“During the Red Wings’ 2024 Development Camp last month, Augustine expressed his gratitude for the remarkable opportunities he’s had. “I’m incredibly thankful for all those who’ve assisted me in reaching my current position,” he said. He also expressed his eagerness to explore more exciting opportunities in the future.

During the 2023-24 season, Augustine stood out as the youngest starting goaltender in NCAA Division 1 hockey. He recorded a 23-9-2 record in 35 games, boasting a 2.96 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage, and three shutouts.
“Augustine gives me a tremendous amount of confidence, even though I’m not on his team,” said Dan Cleary, Red Wings Assistant Director of Player Development. “He has an amazing demeanor – calm and cool, but with a burning competitive fire within.”
Assisting the Spartans in securing their inaugural BIG Ten title was an extraordinary experience for Augustine. He is returning to Michigan State’s campus with a deeper comprehension of what is required to excel at the collegiate level.
“Winning every night is challenging,” stated Augustine. “It’s crucial to approach each game with the mindset that no team will give in, particularly given our successful year. We anticipate being a target in the upcoming year.”

Augustine also stated that he gained a lot of knowledge while playing with the U.S. men’s team at the Worlds.
“Having the chance to go there and mingle with many professional players was an incredible opportunity for me,” commented Augustine. “I relished every moment of it, taking in their advice, listening to them closely. Witnessing how those individuals prepared themselves every day while being a part of a team like that was truly a unique and amazing experience.”
While representing the Red Wings organization at Worlds, Alex Lyon mentored Augustine in goaltending.
“Alex is an outstanding individual who imparted a lot of knowledge to me during his tenure,” commented Augustine. “Observing his diligence in preparation and his serious approach even on game days, it significantly differs from the attitudes I’ve seen from previous teammates,” he added.
Augustine, who aspires to pattern his game after Florida Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, has ambitions of making a name for himself in the NHL. His mature demeanor and determination to reach his primary goal is what distinguishes the South Lyon, Mich., native.
“Augustine’s actions around the rink and his maturity, despite his young age, never cease to amaze me,” said fellow Red Wings prospect and Michigan State teammate, Red Savage. “I often forget that he’s only 19, given that I’m two years his senior.”
