Jets trade up to select Florida State QB Jordan Travis in Round 5 of 2024 NFL Draft

In the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the New York Jets picked up a developmental quarterback.

Gang Green traded up to select Florida State signal-caller Jordan Travis with pick No. 171 on Saturday. New York traded picks 185 and 190 overall to Philadelphia to move up for Travis.

Travis was the eighth quarterback chosen in the 2024 draft, following the selection of six others during the first round on Thursday.

Had Travis and the Seminoles not been affected by a late-season injury, they would probably have made it to the College Football Playoff. This would also have likely resulted in the quarterback being selected earlier.

Now he’ll head to New York to learn behind four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers.

Travis’ sensational senior season and the Seminoles’ bid for a national championship ended when he suffered a serious lower left leg injury in November. NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported last week that Travis is expected to be ready to go by training camp, but injury concerns linger, along with questions of how high his ceiling can be in the pros.

At the very least, he seems to be a player that New York will cheer for. Travis, who stands at 6-foot-1 and weighs 200 pounds, is a smaller underdog. Despite his size, he had a successful career with the Noles filled with awards, statistics, and wins.

In 2023, Travis claimed the titles of ACC Player of the Year and ACC Offensive Player of the Year, following an impressive 11-0 lead for Florida State before he suffered an injury. He notched up 2,756 yards, 20 touchdowns and a mere two interceptions. During his 13-game junior season, Travis achieved a 10-3 record, throwing for 3,214 yards, 24 TDs and only five interceptions. Over his time at Florida State, Travis set a school record with a total of 10,554 yards of offense.

Travis, a dual threat who has consistently scored seven rushing TDs over four seasons, offers an exciting viewing experience with his ability to skillfully escape and throw off-platform. His athleticism, resilience, and intrinsic qualities are additional advantages as he aims to recover from his injury. He could potentially provide the Jets with a promising QB to develop.

It’s a smart move by Jets general manager Joe Douglas to add to the QB room after last season’s debacle. Rodgers continues to be on pace to return from an early-season Achilles injury. Gang Green inked veteran Tyrod Taylor as a reliable stand-in if the 40-year-old starter gets injured again. Following the trade of Zach Wilson to Denver, Travis represents a developmental option who could play a bigger role near the end of Rodgers’ tenure.
