Colts' Shane Steichen: QB Anthony Richardson 'in a really good spot' months after shoulder surgery

One week ago, Anthony Richardson stated he’s “on a mission” to get back to playing football.

For those looking for an update, Colts coach Shane Steichen provided one on Tuesday.

“Richardson is in an excellent position,” commented Steichen. “We have had meaningful conversations that I will certainly respect his privacy about, but he’s doing exceptionally well. His shoulder is recovering nicely and he should be ready for the previously discussed practices. He will be participating in throwing exercises, although we will restrict the intensity. We’ll closely observe and ensure we handle it intelligently, but he’s in a great condition overall.”

This was the outcome the Colts had in mind when they made the difficult decision to shut down Richardson after one month of remarkably promising play in order for him to undergo surgery. The eye was always on the future, and after grinding out the last six and a half months, Richardson is, as Steichen said, in a great place.

This is great for April, but if the Colts had to play a game today, it’s fortunate that the really strenuous part doesn’t kick in for a few more months.

“Yes, indeed. That’s accurate,” responded Steichen when questioned if he would need to restrain Richardson from overexerting in workouts. “He’s, after all, a competitor. I believe that most individuals with a competitive streak who aspire to excel will naturally push their limits. However, we will need to keep a close watch on this and decide the course of action accordingly.”

Nevertheless, it’s fantastic to have Richardson ready to join his teammates, particularly after surgery pushed him to the sidelines, where he could only observe them vying for a playoff spot during the season’s final week. Moreover, as the Colts cover the fundamentals – including, as Steichen mentioned on Tuesday, forming a huddle – Richardson can start mentally preparing a month earlier than when he first started with Indianapolis last year.

Steichen remarked, “It’s a big deal, but not a new experience for him, correct? He’s already familiar with the terminology, as he’s currently attending those meetings. He’s actively participating and answering questions; he’s fully engaged. Thus, he already has a solid base as we move into this offseason and the upcoming season. So far, it has been a positive experience.”

In just one month, it became evident how promising the Colts’ future could be with Richardson as their linchpin, despite his shoulder injury. Their journey will continue with their franchise quarterback now, hoping he will be in top form by the time the regular season commences.
