Rockies @ Diamondbacks Analysis & Breakdown

Arizona leads the league in runs per game. 

The Arizona Diamondbacks are on a different level right now. They’ve gone 26-10 since July 1st and have won 16 of their L19 games overall.

Since July 1st, the D-Backs lead the league in batting average (0.286), runs scored (235), OPS (0.872) and home runs (66). Christian Walker has missed all of August with an oblique injury and the team hasn’t missed a beat.

They’re currently just 3.5 games back of the Dodgers for the lead in the NL West and 4 games ahead in the Wild Card. All signs point to the post-season for Arizona so look for them to stay hot.

The Rockies on the flip side have been really bad this year. They’ve gone 17-44 on the road this year, scoring just 3.7 runs per game. Divisional matchup but with both teams at opposite ends of the division.

With both Ketel Marte and Christian Walker out of the lineup, we’re turning to someone else from this stacked Diamonbacks lineup; Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

Gurriel Jr. will slide into the 3-spot today for Arizona and he’s got some big shoes to fill. He’s batting 0.269 this season with 14 home runs and 58 RBI. Since the All-Star Game, he’s raised his batting average to 0.292.

Against left handed pitchers, Gurriel is hitting 0.336 with a 0.507 SLG; 5 of his 9 home runs have come against lefties despite less than half the number of at-bats.

Last thing about why I love this matchup, Gurriel kills the Rockies. He’s batting 0.407 against them this year through 6 matchups, he’s recorded 13 RBI, 3 home runs, 4 multi-hit games.

Everyone plays well at Coors Field right? Well yeah they do, but 4 of these 6 games have been at Chase Field including all 3 games where Gurriel has hit a home run. He’s batting 0.273 in his career against Gomber and he’s recorded a home run.

With two of their big bats sidelined today, look for Gurriel to step up in a big way.

After everything I stated above, this can’t be a surprise. We’re taking the Diamondbacks on the F5 spread tonight. It’s not exciting, it’s probably super square but I love it.

The Diamondbacks are out for revenge after coming up just short last year, and despite some injuries they’re winning ball games. They’ve won 4 games in a row, including 3 of 4 games against the league leading Phillies.

Arizona sits 3rd in team batting average and lead the league in batting average at home (0.272). They rank 1st against lefties (0.283) and lead the league in runs scored in the first 5 innings (2.99).

That runs per F5 number jumps up at home, where they average 3.21 runs per F5. They lead the league in runs per game, and runs per game at home and tonight they get Austin Gomber on the mound.

Somehow, Gomber has recorded a worse ERA away from Coors Field this year, posting a 5.37 ERA and allowing 12 home runs on the road. He’s giving up 1.82 home runs per 9 innings and 9.68 hits. 

All signs point to the Diamondbacks tonight, no matter how square it might look.
