2024 AL & NL Cy Young Award Odds and Favorites for This Season (June 17 Update)
Opening Day feels like just yesterday, but the 2024 MLB season is already nearing its halfway point. Many teams will reach the mathematical halfway point of the seasons within the next two weeks, while the MLB All-Star Game will take place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas on July 16. With a chunk of the season now in the books, pictures are already taking shape with the division and playoff races, as well as with the MVP, Cy Young Award, and Rookie of the Year races.
Last season, New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole finally won his first Cy Young Award, claiming AL honors after twice finishing runner-up in 2019 and 2022.
In the NL, San Diego’s Blake Snell became the latest pitcher to win a Cy Young in both leagues. Snell, the 2018 AL Cy Young winner, was outstanding over the final four months of the season after dealing with some early ups and downs.
There will be a repeat winner in either league this season. Cole has yet to make his season debut due to injury, while Snell, who signed with the San Francisco Giants in the offseason, is 0-3 with a 9.51 ERA in six starts this season and is currently sidelined with a groin injury.
But over the first two and a half months of the MLB season, a number of talented have emerged as AL and NL Cy Young contenders.
Several familiar, established arms are in the mix, but some new and unexpected names have pushed themselves into the fray. The coming weeks and months are sure to bring many twists and turns, but here is how current Cy Young odds shake out at BetOnline.

Who Could Be the Top 2024 Cy Young Award Candidates?
American League Cy Young Favorites
Tarik Skubal, Detroit Lions (+175)
2024 Stats for Skubal (14 starts): 8-2, 2.00 ERA, 86.0 IP, 16 BB, 98 K, 0.91 WHIP, .197 OBA, 3.6 WAR
The Tigers have a losing record this season, but Skubal is doing his part to keep them hovering around respectability.
The 27-year-old lefty has been one of the best in the business since returning from flexor tendon surgery last July, going 15-5 with a 2.49 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP, and 200 strikeouts in 166.1 innings across 29 starts.
While some of the other Cy Young hopefuls are on some of MLB’s better teams, the Tigers not being in that group won’t prevent Skubal from taking home some hardware at the end of the season.
Corbin Burnes, Baltimore Orioles (+300)
2024 Stats for Burnes (15 starts): 8-2, 2.14 ERA, 92.2 IP, 24 BB, 89 K, 1.04 WHIP, .209 OBA, 2.2 WAR
Leaving the fractured relationship that he had with the Milwaukee Brewers has helped Burnes return to the level that saw him win NL Cy Young honors in 2021.
He isn’t racking up strikeouts in the same way he did in Milwaukee, but he is still very much capable of doing so, as shown by two 11-strikeout games this season.
Consistency was an issue post-Cy Young in Milwaukee, but he is on a fantastic run to start his tenure with the Orioles. Through 15 starts, he has gone at least five innings and allowed three or fewer runs every time out. In ten starts, he has gone at least six innings and allowed two or fewer runs.
A few bumps in the road may come, but not veering too far off of that level of consistency could give him the edge in the AL Cy Young race when many candidates may deal with more pronounced bumps.
Tanner Houck, Boston Red Sox (+800)
2024 Stats for Houck (14 starts): 7-5, 2.08 ERA, 91.0 IP, 15 BB, 89 K, 0.95 WHIP, .208 OBA, 3.1 WAR
Raise your hand if you had Houck being one of the AL Cy Young favorites in mid-June.
Houck burst onto the scene in 2020 by going 3-0 with an 0.53 ERA in three starts. But from that point, he hadn’t quite made the leap that such a start might have foretold. Last season, he was 6-10 with a 5.01 ERA in 21 starts.
It appears that the light has come on for him, judging from his start to this season. In his 14 starts, Houck has gone at least six innings and allowed three or fewer runs 11 times, including each of his last five starts.
Improved control has gone a long way for Houck. Across 2022 and 2023, his K/BB ratio was just 2.46 (155 K/63 BB). This season, it is 5.9.
Can he keep this up? It remains to be seen, but it will be a big boost for Boston’s playoff hopes if he can.
National League Cy Young Favorites
Ranger Suarez, Philadelphia Phillies (+350)
2024 Season Stats for Suarez (14 starts): 10-1, 1.77 ERA, 86.1 IP, 19 BB, 91 K, 0.88 WHIP, .186 OBA, 3.2 WAR
The Phillies have been the best team in the National League, and Suarez has been the top performer on the best team in the National League.
The potential has always been there, but since he transitioned to a full-time starter, it hasn’t fully come together on a consistent basis.
But after going 4-6 with a 4.18 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP in 22 starts last season, Suarez has unlocked a new version of himself this season.
As with Houck, improved control is going a long, long way.
Entering this season, his career K/BB ratio was just 2.54 (409 K/161 BB). This season, it sits at 4.8. Overall, hitters are not getting much off of him either, with his OBA this season .055 lower than his career number.
Zack Wheeler, Philadelphia Phillies (+450)
2024 Season Stats for Wheeler (15 starts): 8-4, 2.84 ERA, 92 IP, 29 BB, 99 K, 1.01 WHIP, .193 OBA, 1.8 WAR
Wheeler has been overshadowed by Suarez, but he is well on his way to finishing with an ERA below 3.00 for the fourth time in his five seasons in Philadelphia. That is even after allowing eight runs, nine hits (four homers), and two walks in 4.1 innings in a loss to the Orioles yesterday.
Ultimately, a few such poorer starts are the difference in why Wheeler is behind Suarez at present. Sunday’s horror show against Baltimore was the third time this season that he has allowed five or more runs.
But when Wheeler has been on, he has nearly untouchable on a frequent basis. In eight starts, he has allowed fewer than two runs. In four of those starts, he has gone seven or more innings and allowed no runs or one run.
If he can have more of those starts and fewer of the starts like he had against the Orioles, he will be in the NL Cy Young race for the duration.
Shota Imanaga, Chicago Cubs (+650)
2024 Season Stats for Imanaga (13 starts): 7-1, 1.89 ERA, 11 BB, 78 K, 0.99 WHIP, .221 OBA, 2.6 WAR
Imanaga has hit the ground running after making the move from Japan, where he posted an ERA under 3.00 in six of eight seasons with the Yokohama BayStars.
He allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his first nine starts before finally looking mortal against the Milwaukee Brewers on May 29 (4.1 IP, 8 H, 7 H, 7 R). He has responded by allowing only four earned runs in 18 innings in his first three June starts.
